十二月十九日　 星期三 　 上午錢存典先生來，十時半往訪 Prof. Toynbee 於外交部硏究室，談至十二時，所談爲彼之 Study of History 中之歷史哲學。彼謂彼之 Challenge & Response 學說受心理學家 Jung 之影 響。彼自Classical Scholarship 起始現以 Mythology 方面材料解釋歷史，彼亦受 Spengler 之刺激， 但不精，成其 deterministic view，彼承認用 dialectical method 說及「陰陽」消長之理。彼認 所謂decline不過心理受外界力量所起之變動。我告以我之歷史哲學，彼贊同。彼反對 Fisher 之歷史 觀，以 insurance 中之 accident 不足搖動，是對全體之估計，我以 Lyons Corner House 爲例， 彼此相笑。我認 decline，不過 reintegration，彼贊成。彼約將來 Survey of International Affairs 要我協助。 　中午通伯請吃飯，在新探花樓（Maxim's），為周書楷餞行，取眼鏡將家信及手錶交周。下午偕 通伯與君勱去看 Shaw： "Man & Superman"，君勱請吃飯，歸途與其談國外政情。趙德潔來，擬一 長電致雪艇。又作長函致雪艇，談英、美、蘇、法外交情形。作一函致總裁，深夜三時半方睡。
